So talking about hope.... (If you missed my last post wait till the end or go check it out... hope is the theme for the mo 😉) One thing (or 8) that always reminds me of hope are these pictures. And they are now - as of this month - available on my websites as deep edge canvas prints! (Link in comments) But back to the story... It was 2020 and we all remember everything that came with that. We were 'shielding' (as it was called) as a family (read... no human contact or outdoorsy adventures) and we had a 1yr old daughter at home who LOVED the outdoors.. (Looking back now, not going outwith your garden seems ridiculous but it was what it was and we had a transplanted kidney to protect so no way were taking chances!) Our daughter, let's call her Mini M, had, and has, eagle eyes. So every night we'd move one thing to see if she noticed (she did... always...) that then snowballed over weeks and months to elaborate scenes involving her toys getting up to various mischievous and fun endeavours. And then one day I thought - what if I drew her pictures and popped them on the bookcase as a surprise in the morning? So that's what I did. 'Doodles for my daughter' as it was affectionately named, was born. And she LOVED them. My heart was full and some hope was born. Hope of one day seeing the animals I drew in real life. Hope that she wasn't missing out too much and hope that the love we all shared was enough. And you know what?... She still, at 6 years old, adores these pictures. When I did test runs of the canvases she claimed them too..... even though she already has all the originals framed for her room..... So there you go folks! This batch of hope is now available for you too. And like I say for all of my art - DO NOT BUY IT! Unless you love it and have to have it. Cos art is always an investment, telling its own story on your walls and becoming part of your journey. A little stack of hope. So I've had an idea (or 10) bumbling round my head for a wee bit and decided to say yes to this one. This - is my little stack of hope. Hope is a cool thing I think. It can be found when you can't see it. It can be cultivated, encouraged to be. It can take your breath away or be as passing as a single breath. And a few questions have been in my head - what role do the arts play in hope? What role does hope play in arts? What impact do either of those things have on society? So while I may never land on an answer I'm enjoying letting this roll around my head so while that's happening I'm going to spend 30 days playing alongside it. 30 days where I'll meditate on hope and draw/paint/splash/whatever on wee 4x4" bits of paper culminating in a little stack of hope. 'The Invitation' 20x16" Acrylic on canvas Painted live 2024 SOLD AAAAND another one from the backlog! (Yep there's still more to go so buckle in there...😆) It's a running joke with my 'pintin pals' (painting friends) that any time I prep and test out ideas in advance of painting live it's never what I actually end up painting... I turn up feeling all smug cos I'm ready to go, I pray about it and almost instantly realise that the story I've been practicing is not the one I'll be painting that night 🙄🙄 Honestly it's take around 20 live events to get to the point that it doesn't bother me.... as much... It's been a lesson in ego and humility. When you're painting as part of a band or picking up on a vibe of event, the corporate experience of folk there is so much more important than making myself look good. Does that mean I don't prepare now....? Just wing it...? Of course not!! Every painting, every study session, every time in quiet meditation (esp on the lead up to an event), hopefully, makes my work better, more impactful and something more than just a pretty picture 😉 I hope to never stop learning, pushing, growing and playing cos it's so much more fun when I do! Anyway back to this painting - this painting I prepped for and the part of me that prepped got annoyed that it wouldn't be painted so what did I do?.... I painted this one on the side while the main painting was drying between layers... Have I done that again..? No!! It was super hard to juggle both at the same time in such a short timeframe! 'He loves me' Acrylic on canvas Painted live 2024 SOLD Next up in our 'paintings Rebekah didn't upload from the past couple of years' we have this one. Another painted live at an event, this time alongside the amazing musicians/vocalists @abinalongo and @mummaclaus. I started this off on a canvas primed first with gold then with black which is a technique some of the old masters used to use to make light do clever things at it reflects and retracts through the gaps between paint molecules. In honesty it's not a technique I often use but sometimes something makes sense for a particular vibe and a particular space and this was one of those. In a time when things look bleak and dark sometimes focusing on what is good and true can change our perspective. And a cheeky wee note that folk wouldn't have known - underneath the dark, if you peal it away, is pure gold. 😉 But if you've made it this far I'd love to know - what do you see? 'Freedom' 2024 30x40" (I think) acrylic on canvas SOLD 'Music' 2020 5x7" ink on linen paper NFS Next up in the chat up series is this painting - Freedom. Another in the, painted live in a short time alongside live musicians category. This one hit some folk very specifically. Folk who were walking into a season a freedom from a season of quite the opposite. 2 people in particular were moved that night, one from a different continent and one from the other side of the country. These evenings for me are often intense and busy - not in a bad way at all, just the reality of the advanced prep, staying in the zone painting and the logistics of set up and take down. So often I don't hear any feedback till later on. With this one around a year later I heard a beautiful story attached to this night and what she took from this painting. Not my story to tell but always an honour to hear. This one also happens to hang on the wall of one of the best couples I know who I now count amongst some of my closest friends. I knew them at the time but not like I do now and I love that my painting has been a part of their journey! As often happens I prep a lot in advance then turn up on the night, pray, and the image I had planned doesn't fit. Another image comes into my head minutes before the start... more on that another day. On this evening the image was a reworking of one I'd painted at a fraction of the size in a different medium 3/4years previously alongside music from my husband. That ended up being the beginning of a season of creative freedom for both of us and it feels like it still really is just the beginning. So many doors and experiences appear when boundaries are removed. Some we need to fight for, some we just need to open ourselves up to. 'All along the river' 20x20" Acrylic on canvas Painted live 2024 SOLD Right, back to the backlog! This one is from over a year ago painted in around 30mins alongside musicians at @filling_station_buchan Sometimes a painting can hit someone in a way that's hard to describe and this was one of those. It spoke strongly to a gentleman in ways he couldn't describe and evoked a very strong emotional reaction that took us both by surprise. It's a huge honour when someone has an emotional response to a piece but even more when it's someone you don't see coming! I've learned since then never to underestimate the power of art, even that that I create, and especially when actively praying and listening during the process. It's tempting to try and quantify things in our ever more logic driven world but some things go beyond a measuring. And those things are often the things I hold most dear.
